Transport of free surface liquid films and drops by external ratchets and self-ratcheting mechanisms

چکیده
We discuss the usage of ratchet mechanisms to transport a continuous phase in several micro-fluidic settings. In particular, we study the transport of a dielectric liquid in a heterogeneous ratchet capacitor that is periodically switched on and off. The second system consists of drops on a solid substrate that are transported by different types of harmonic substrate vibrations. We argue that the latter can be seen as a self-ratcheting process and discuss analogies between the employed class of thin film equations and Fokker–Planck equations for transport of discrete objects in a ‘particle ratchet’. 2010 Elsevier B.V. Ratchet-driven fluid transport in bounded two-layer films of immiscible liquids
We present a two-layer thin film model allowing us to study the behavior of a general class of ‘wettability ratchets’ that can be employed to transport a continuous phase. Brownian ratchets, in contrast, are normally used to transport particles or molecules within a continuous carrier fluid without transporting the fluid itself. The wettability ratchet is based on a switchable, spatially asymme...

Surface ratchets can guide droplet transport for microfluidic systems. Here, we demonstrated the actuation of microgels encapsulated in droplets using a unidirectional nanotextured surface, which moves droplets with low vibration amplitudes by a ratcheting mechanism. The nanofilm carries droplets along the ratchets with minimal drop shape deformation to move the encapsulated soft cargo, i.e., m...
متن کاملA Kinetic Investigation of a Carrier-Mediated Transport through a Bulk Liquid Membrane
The kinetics of the potassium thiocyanate transport mediated by dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 (L) through a bulk liquid membrane is studied experimentally and theoretically. The proposed model is based on the assumption of a pure diffusion of the complex salt [K·L]+SCN¯ through the liquid membrane stagnant films at the interfaces. It illustrates the ...
متن کاملMechanism for Cell Separation Based on Size and Deformability Using Microfluidic Ratchets
We present a mechanism for separating cells based on size and deformability using microfluidic ratchets created using micrometer-scale funnel constrictions. The force required to deform individual cells through such constrictions is directionally asymmetric, enabling rectified transport from oscillatory flow of the bulk fluid. Combining ratcheting with simple filtration enables cell separation ...

Diclofenac sodium as ophthalmic dosage form is used in patients treatment of eye pain, swelling and redness recovering from cataract surgery but it faces the bioavailability limitation of eye drops due to effective protective mechanisms and corneal barrier functions in the eyes. Therefore, this investigation was aimed to develop ocular film formulations to achieve controlled drug release. Drug ...
